Energy Progress Report
Roatan Electric Company has purchased and taken delivery of a new 4.5MW Wartsila generator that is now being installed and expected to be online by November 2008. Installation of an existing, 2.2MW Wartsila as well as complete overhaul of the existing Wartsila units 1 and 2 together with the 4.5MW will give RECO 11MW of new dependable , efficient generation. This improvement will allow removal of the rental units located on RECO property.
As far as mid and long term plans for generation goes, studies are currently underway to evaluate the feasibility for extending a subsea cable to the mainland ( possibly to include Utila ) to connect to available hydro sources . Other possible options presently being evaluated are wind power on the east end to synchronize with the RECO grid and provide power to the remote community of Saint Helene.
RECO will be contracting a power engineering firm in the fall of 2008 to conduct a definitive study to re-engineer the distribution system with emphasis on decentralizing the present system that includes the main substation ( at RECO premises ), has poor voltage regulation and fault isolation capabilities.
Plans are also underway to automate metering and billing utilizing AMR's.
We are also working to upgrade our billing systems which include plans to allow online payments to our bank account.
